Chapter 5

Joey hated being called away this morning. He didn’t mind the work, but he had hoped to wake his new wife up by making sure she knew she was his. But duty called. It sucked, but he was there for the police force when they needed him.

The body that had been found hadn’t been there very long. It was still decomposing, and the shorts and shirt she had on were intact enough that he could tell it was a female victim. Her purse and a pair of hiking boots were atop her body. They were waiting for the coroner to come out and take his pictures before either of them touched anything. The female’s purse was lying right on top of her body, covered in blood.

He and Sher had cordoned off the area first thing after they arrived on the scene. Sher was asking questions of the man, Mr. Benson, who had uncovered the gruesome mess, while Joey inspected the area around the dig sight. Mr. Benson’s dog, Mary Beth, had brought him back one of the femur bones after not finding the stick he’d thrown.

“I never in my life expected to see this sort of thing out here. Why, you could have knocked me over with a feather. It did. Knock me back. It took my head a bit for it to let my eyes tell me that was a body right there.” Mr. Benson shook his head. “That ain’t right, you know. Just putting a body out in the open like it was. I guess they thought that putting that there wagon over it might have protected it a bit. But that still don’t make it right. What they should have done was call on you cops. Damned shame that people have no respect for the dead no more.”

“Yes, sir. Do you know who owns this land?” Joey knew it was Mr. Benson, but Sher was asking to make sure he wouldn’t lie to them. The elderly man said that his son, also Mr. Ed Benson, had bought it from him a couple of weeks ago. “All right. Do you know where your son might be? I just have a few questions about the land here. You know, if he has security cameras and the like. It might go a long way in us being able to find whoever it was that killed this poor woman.”

“He don’t have nothing like that. Wanted me to give him the land, on account’a him being my son, but a man’s gotta eat. Besides, I don’t like him overly much anymore. Took all of his savings, or what he said was his, to buy me out. ‘Course, he didn’t have any savings either that I ever heard of, but he surely did come up with the cash money.” Ed laughed a little. “I have cameras around here. Right over there on the barn, as a matter of fact. I don’t know that I’ve checked on the recordings in a while, but you’re more than welcome to have a look at them.
